D’n’b royalty label,
Metalheadz, really needs no
introduction, at all. Pinning down a residency at one of the London’s best clubs,
Cable, and nearing its
100th
release, the gang behind
We Fear Silence promised fans nothing less than d&b of the murkiest proportions
and a smoldering atmosphere. Impossible to disappoint, the monstrous line-up
included
Lenzman, Jubei, Klute b2b
Marcus Intalex, Commix and all round legend
David Rodigan, with a wee dose of techno in room two.

We entered the asylum to be greeted with
King “Ram Jam” Rodigan blasting the
hedonistic ravers with
Beenie Man’s
‘
Sim Simma (Who Am I)’. Navigating
through the crowd, who were joining in with Rodigan’s chants of “show me those ganja
lighters” after every other tune, was proving almost impossible. Showering the
club with dubplates, including those from
King
Tubby and
Nas & Damian Marley,
the crowd literally hung from platforms around the room. Sixty-year-old Rodigan,
who everyone wishes was their uncle, played a truly eclectic set that included
a bit of dubstep, jungle, reggae dancehall and an ending of
Johnny Cash’s ‘
Ring of Fire.’ A perfect figure to step in as headliner while
Goldie currently tours Australia.
Lenzman, up next, chose the most anticipated tune of the moment to begin
with.
Dub Phizix’s forthcoming ‘
Marka’ sliced through the smoky
atmosphere like shattering glass. An appearance from
MC Tali on the mic provided a lovely touch during Lenzman’s soulful
‘Broken Dreams’ that had the boys
cramming to the front to get a look-in before demanding a rewind.
Riya and Enei’s ‘
No Fear’ had the whole room chanting along to “
No fear, surprise, hesitation or doubt” as Lenz blended it into a
gulley rhythm.
Icicle’s classic
‘Dreadnaught’ made a nice re-appearance,
as did
Riya and Lenzman’s blissful ‘
Open Page’.

Up on the decks next were the head-honchos of
two of the best d&b labels,
Commercial
Suicide and
Soul:R, indulging
the night in a hedonistic back to back set. Both artists looked to be
thoroughly enjoying the set as much as the crowd, as steam was congregating
above the booth. Driving, dense basslines and plenty of reverb manipulated the
dance floor into crazy dance-offs to the left off the booth.
Klute couldn’t resist and also dropped
‘
Marka’, not for the last time that
night as Jubei, also dropped it at the start of his set. Highlight of
Klute and Marcus Intalex’s set had to
be their dropping of
Enei’s
forthcoming on, titled
‘Obsession’
with
DRS. It is fair to say Cable
might be needing a new roof sometime soon.

Rounding the night off to an exciting climax,
Breakage showed off his skills with
D-Bridge’s rerub of
Skream’s lost ‘
Fire Call.’ The club was starting to empty out a little, leaving
dancing space for the veteran ravers, as
Jubei
brought the whole incredible night to a close with
Doc Scott’s quintessential ‘
Ghost
Face Killa.’ Amazing vibes.
Yet another solid gold example of the success of the
We
Fear Silence parties,
Metalheadz
literally blew the faces off all the ravers in the room. A night of superb sets
and a fantastic atmosphere, the next one will be yet again unmissable.
