Tonight marks the coming together of two of Leeds most
celebrated nightlife champions. The first is
The Warehouse – a 33 year old
venue with a rich electronic music heritage running all the way through its
history. The second is the legendary house night
Back to Basics, going strong for an incredible 20 years. After housing themselves at a number of
venues around the city, they now move to The Warehouse and start a new run of
twice monthly parties.
To kick off this new era, a selection of residents plus
headliners
Gavin Herlihy and
Lil Louis are on the line-up. Arriving early the
place is already full, with people milling around outside in the large smoking
area, dancing to slower warm-up grooves in the cosy Loft upstairs and filling
out the large square dancefloor in the main room. There is a mix of old faces who have no doubt
be Basics addicts for 20 years, along side more wide-eyed ravers here for the
first time.
Beneath the lights and lasers, people danced as one whilst the
hefty Funktion One Soundsystem thumps out a range of house and tech beats. Gavin Herlihy tested a new track of his
which is due out on Get Physical in Spring and the crowd seems to appreciate
it’s nice groove, whooping at every breakdown and cheering when it kicks off
again.
The crowd warmed to the new home with people
happily surprised by the fact it is a larger venue but still feels cosy and
homely. All night long people chatted about the decor, sound system, lights and
general look of the place all being to their liking, so the stage is perfectly
set from Lil Louis to come on as the main headliner.
Playing a set of classic and soulful house, when the legend
drops
'French Kiss' the place goes wild, with the now shoulder to shoulder
dancefloor all jumping about crazily despite the late hour, On this evidence
Back to Basics has found a
perfect new home... here’s to
the next 20 years!
