It’s not hard to spot the ones who want it the most. They’re constantly grinding, and using all the talents that are at their disposal to get themselves known and hyped. And when you’ve got that determination combined with that talent, wonderful things can happen. This is pretty much the story of London starlet Goldierocks, a multi-faceted young lady who is pretty inescapable at the moment.
But before you think she’s just another attention-grabbing socialite “DJ”, you can think again. After we caught her ripping up Eddy Temple-Morris’ Remix Bubble to shreds to Secret Garden Party this year with a riot of bassy, wonky house, fidget and filth, we were damn impressed – and that was apparently her operating at diminished capacity after barely any sleep. Impressive. She’s also co-produced remixes for the likes of Example, Crystal Fighters, Foals and The Kooks, and juggles a radio show, a podcast, a TV show and much more alongside all that. What a trooper.
How and when were you first infected by dance music?
Sneaking off to dance hall sound-system parties in Jamaica when I was a young teen and becoming totally addicted to that unique feeling of a heavy bass vibrating through your back bone.
When did you start producing, and how long was it before you started making tracks that you were really happy with?About three years ago with my good friend Aaron Audio (son of Grammy award winning producer Trevor Horn). We started re-working tracks and playing with beats and just discovering what sounds made our blood bubble. It was a natural progression from our live DJ sets and a fun opportunity to do some remixes for friends like The Kooks, Natty, Crystal Fighters & Tinashe.
What have been your personal favourite tracks / productions so far?I was really proud of our remixes of Example’s
Wont Go Quietly – Goldierocks & Audio Cachaca Remix & Goldierocks & Audio Dark Dub Remix. Playing them out always gets the crowds-a-bopping. Also our monthly two hour podcasts for U-Dance Loop FM China are a really exciting - an uninhibited taster of what gets us jumping off the studio walls.
Where does your name come from?I’ve got super long blonde hair and am known for really ripping it up in my live DJ sets hence ‘Goldie.. rocks’. And my chums have shaken it up for their own purposes - Goldie, Goldierocky, Ms Rocks..
Who would you most like to work with?I’d love to remix Groove Armada (I worship them) or experiment musically with William Orbit (he has such an artistically innovative mind). And get in now with Totally Enormous Extinct Dionsaurs & Fench-Soler…hot ones to watch this year on the electro scene.
What have you got in store for the coming months?Touring! Just did Creamfields, V Festival and Leeds and now live dates in Kazakhstan, New York, Mexico and Ukraine this Autumn. My weekly radio show ‘The Selector’ keeps me busy interviewing the likes of Basement Jaxx, Roots Manuva & Groove Armada and I’ve just started a weekly TV show for 4Music
BOOM TV meeting the likes of Professor Green & Tinchy Stryder.
What can we expect from one of your DJ sets?Lots of thrashing about like I’m possessed, crowd-surfing etc.. just rocking out. As DJs we are entertainers - our soul job is to make sure people have a fucking god time. Musically - anything goes as long as it’s eclectic, energetic and danceable. But you’re guaranteed a lot of electro and mash up, a wee bit of dubstep and a few dashings of minimal.
If you weren’t a DJ/producer/presenter, what would you be? A yak farmer.
Which other producers and DJs and artists do you really rate?I don’t think I’ve ever heard a Count & Sinden trak that hasn’t made me to want to propel myself off the nearest piece of furniture. Awesome. I’ve always got love for Eddy Temple-Morris and his act Losers and I love what Hudson Mohawke is doing right now for electroclash/hip-pop.
