UK singles market grows while album sales fall

Good news for the UK singles market – new figures show that it grew in 2008 by almost 33% on 2007. Meanwhile however, album sales slumped by 3%. This all singles a shift in consumer tastes to the less rigid world of online track downloads – so while it’s positive news that there is growth in terms of overall expenditure (it seems), there is some concern for the album format. Still, digital album sales experienced a 65% increase on 2007.

BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor said "during a recession, people look for purchases that are excellent value for money and bring a lot of enjoyment, and music does just this".
