So called because its star turn is a ranting evangelist, The Preacher is another dragstrip-blazing lung-buster from Pyramid going all out. Steam rising from its cauldron of toil and trouble, it bursts with energy out of a perpetual synth flash-fire, helping the featured man of the cloth call on the God of Hell Fire, and a rabid synth repetition embracing the shock of the ensuing G-forces. Like riding a heat-seeking missile, the sheer volume and incessant attacking strategy of the whole thing swallows speakers on sight and makes for a whiplash-certified Big Dipper with go-faster stripes erupting into an inferno.
A great A-side is tempered by a mediocre B-side. Broken Dreams is much less interesting, its disobedience falling all too conveniently into the rock-breaks category. For such a seemingly natural union, so many just do the guitar slams by numbers, and this is no exception. While abundant with bang-your-bonce oomph and ideally suited for the sweat-sucking tents of summer festivals, from the plunging power chords to the draconian whip-flexing vocal grooming creatures of the night, it doesn’t do much to convince that it’s breaking new ground. Testify with The Preacher instead and all will be well with the world.
