Buzzin’ Fly is such a great label. I find it really stretching in its musical ambitions. Each release seems to ask; "is this something you should like? - and then questions you as to why or why not. The first release (something which I definitively could answer that I did not like) ‘Lone Cat (Holding On)’ reputedly sold 10,000 copies on vinyl. Now that’s massive. Since then the label has toyed with an interesting deep house sound, bending genres and creating new niches. Every now and then Buzzin’ Fly releases a gem, and 'Down to Earth' is one of those.
I know very little about Kimouts apart from they come from Russia and produce a sublime style of deep house that is very difficult to find in this day and age of digital music. The original is almost Martin Buttrich style (dare I say even better?). Interspersed with those subtle synth stabs and counter melodies that worm into your consciousness, a deep sub bass the sound is so well rounded and complete you are immediately attracted to the track for it’s production values. The deep washes and warm strings are almost cinematic in appeal, in fact the whole track has a score type quality, which is wholly uplifting. The attention to detail is really impressive too. Perfect warm up or home listening; this is not a roof-raiser, but should be one of those tracks that are sought out by the deep house aficionados and usually end up on a bunch of compilations.
Berlin based MyMy turn in two fabulous remixes, sounding quite different but keeping the original melodies, and backing them with the subtle rhythm section that deep house should be all about. It’s clever, it’s detailed and remarkably funky.
Amazingly (yes I am a fussy bastard) I really like all three mixes although MyMy’s Monterrey Wash Remix 1 is probably the best. It won’t be to everyone’s taste but if you have a deep moment now and then you could do much worse than commit to this one.
