Sly One - This Late Stage

This is a rare solo outing from Sly One, who usually releases with studio partner Jurrane. London based Graham Crockford is an accomplished producer and studio engineer, and since 2004 has been resident at Planet. As an aside he pens an excellent blog on his website which provides in-depth coverage of production and DJing topics.
The original mix of This Late Stage is a dreamy affair, with a punchy kick, bouncy bassline and steely percussion giving it solid foundations upon which the uplifting melodies are layered over. He weaves in an ethereal vocal sample which is delivered in a foreign tongue, apparently translating to “love”.

Egyptian duo Aly and Fila are brought in for the headline remix and don’t disappoint, taking things on a darker psy-influenced path. Upping the temp from the off by bringing in their unique thunderous kick which has with it a psy-style, rumbling acid midbass. The vocal samples are kept in their entirety and a piano sequence is added to the breakdown and works well, in tandem with the raw synths, before the dark storm clouds gather once more.

The B side You is a quirky fusion with bits of prog, techno, electro and trance all skillfully woven together. It starts off with a tribal percussion, squelchy prog effects before a dirty electro bassline slips in. At the break some melodic harmonies are introduced as well as a hint of a vocoder sample, with some other proggy effects before the electro bassline zips back in.
