2009 has been 'the year of Hell', indeed. His album Teufelswerk was lauded as possibly being 'the best dance album of all time' by Beatportal, and he's managed to remain in the limelight ever since; gaining more ground after Radio Slave's future classic 28-minute remix of The DJ, which was quickly followed by a brief media controversy involving Diddy and Felix da Housecat.
After briskly dusting himself off from the Diddy-drama, Hell recently returned to the studio with the ever-dependable Christian Prommer (who also assisted in the studio with the techno-laced cuts on Teufelswerk) to produce Freak It, a fresh collaborative effort that fits ever-so snuggly in Buzzin' Fly's eclectic catalog of hits.
The collective effort between Hell and Prommer produced some amazing results. Hell's electro'ish roots breathe through the bassline from the get-go, as each passing bar is accentuated by incoming hats, bells and heavily effected '80s synth lines. But Prommer's more mellow-dramatic side lays into Freak It, allowing the track to grow in tension without lifting it into a Hellish orbit. That is, until the crescendo at the five-minute mark, when a bit-crushed electro-tinged bassline surfaces, takes aim at even the most well-kept Funktion system, with full intent on blowing every single woofer in the house. There is simple no genre to describe Freak It, it's in a league of it's own; and it owns the dancefloor every single time it's played.
On the remix end, Buzzin' Fly mainstay Spencer Parker gives Freak It a heavy dose of dubbing down, concentrating a mid-level groove that slowly encompasses and consumes you over the course of ten-minutes. While the energy knob is turned down a notch compared to its original predescessor, Spencer's remix remains captivating in it's own right.
