Tom Colontonio - Subdued

One of Discover’s favourite sons, American trance don Tom Colontonio returns after releases on Monster and Vandit. The original mix is built on a punchy kick and some techy percussion which give it some fizz, then the wobbly bass lumbers in. he works in some understated pads which take things on an upwards trajectory before a haunting electro riff gains the upper hand. The breakdown is a joy with a rippling riff and keyboard melody providing plenty of tingling summertime vibe. As ever from Tom, this is a solid slice of trance with a techier edge.

Onto the remix which is delivered from Melbourne’s Mike Nichol, hot on the heels of his Discover White Label debut. The track starts off with a more sinister feel thanks to the background effects and vocal samples, and he delays the entry of the kick, which has a fatter sound to it when it does slot in. The melodies have been delicately tweaked to give them a deeper edge while retaining all of the punch from the original. On this form, expect to hear a lot more of Mike Nichol.
