Jonny L has been rocking dancefloors with futuristic techstep since way back in the day. Here he turns his attention to one of the standout tunes from High Contrast's last long player, Tough Guys Don't Dance, and gives exactly what one might expect.
Where the original was upbeat, jazzy and lush, Jonny L's remix strips it back right to its basic elements and imbues the track with a much darker vibration. Minimal, highly compressed two-step breaks and watery, echoey sound effects ride over pounding bass, giving way every 16 bars to a Bad Company style distorted synth motif. Meanwhile, the vocals that took pride of place in the original mix are filtered and echo-chambered to within an inch of their lives, in true dub style.
Gone are the classical strings and jazzy cymbal crashes so characteristic of High Contrast: this is tech drum and bass in its purest form and bound to get dancefloors rocking.
