Fourtet – AKA Kieran Hebden - has always had disparate and adventurous tastes when it comes to music, never once settling for a particular angle or
style – no matter the trends circulating or the negative connotations of
watering down musical styles, Kieran has always maintained his reputation as a
musical wonder for all fans of music, electronic or otherwise.
But for the new Fabric Live
mix, Hebden has concentrated on a linear structure throughout the mix, focusing
on the traits, layout and tempo of UK music’s most malleable and influential hybridised
form – UK garage and the multitude of facets and nuances born from it. He takes
a fresh approach to a musical form that often insulates itself within the
confines and purist notions of scene heads. Mixing up classic weirdo-house from
Ricardo Villalobos with the washed out, post-modernist sounds of Burial, Kieran’s
mix not only demonstrates the power of the 2step sound, but historically traces
it back to pre-London musical forms, long before the UK underground had its
moment of shining seniority.
There s a few vintage numbers
included on the mix – Persian, Crazy Bald Heads, Apple all making straight UKG appearances
alongside the alternative sounds and far-strecthing reach of people such as
Floating Points, C++, David Borden and even Musical Mob’s grime classic 'Pulse X',
without going on too steep of a tangent or alienating the garage and broken beat
appreciators that Hebden has decided to target on his mix.
Instead of opting for
instantaneous, gratifying and sharply cut quick-mixes of current tunes, Hebden
has managed to draw the lines between the disparately connected genres in a
dusty, dug-out mix that will keep both heads and newcomers interested with
burning passion.
