Various Artists mixed by Claude VonStroke - fabric46

Claude VonStroke’s definitely a good DJ, but his sound doesn’t suit every occasion. For example – he smashed it at the Mobilee roof party at Sonár last year, but the following month at EXIT in Serbia, he seemed a bit lost in the epic, gargantuan setting. His ongoing relationship with fabric is a surefire winner though, giving us high expectations for this CD.

Funked-up and quirky at the start, we get some jaunty trumpet-filled Ekkohaus grooves, before those unmistakable P-Funk tones of Bootsy Collins make an appearance on The Greasy Beat – an inspired collabo with VonStroke that combines his love of sub bassy rhythms with a dash of fun. He then leads us into deep, choppy waters full of strange textures, tribal undertones shaking our foundations and DJ Deeon’s Shake It vocal keeping his underlying hip-hop fascination in the picture.

Stimming keeps it bugged-out with the indecipherable vocal snippets of After Eight, while Robag Whrume’s Drikkibass Remix of Peter Lauer’s Free Entry For Girls raises a knowing Eurotrash smile. The mix then delves into more heady, subtly melodic material, moving towards an emotive feel compared to the playful weirdness of the first section. Voodeux’s Just A Spoonful is gorgeous, dreamy and fluffy, Italoboyz Bla Bla Bla is seductive, sexy and throbbing, and the violins on Kiki’s Immortal are as graceful as you’d like. Typically though, he can’t keep his naughty gene subdued for too long – the bumping bass of Dinamoe’s Maceo battling it out with the cute melody of Clara Moto & Mimu’s Silently, and soon the tumbling percussion, elasticated bass and skippy rhythm of Donk Boys’ One Tooth Missing churning is into submission.

The beats continue to gallop, riding us towards a sublime, cinematic finale, thanks to the otherworldly mystique of Stimming’s One Weekend and VonStroke’s beautiful new track Aundy – a future classic of his that can sit proudly with any of his greatest, full of warm, melancholic 808 bass and twinkling chime sounds. His sounds translates well to CD thanks to its plentiful character and colour, and his editing skills have ensured that it’s a punchy affair that keeps you interested. As usual, his balance of humour and killer grooves across a range of styles and sub-genres is expertly constructed, making this a mix that’s sure to please most heads.
