Duck Hunt EP

By: Bearweasel
Label: Supernature
Written by: charlietarr
Rating: 8/10

Bearweasel have not put a foot wrong in recent times, and have produced another solid release here on Supernature, ably supported by two producers, in Boris Werner and Ali Nasser, who are on top of their game. While the Bearweasel originals are classy, solid, deep house wigglers, it's the remixes where the fun really shines through.

Superhero is a fun bit of bongo driven dub house, nice and bouncey and with a meaty enough kick to make it a dance floor winner. Some ghostly filtered effects and stabby synths provide the back up. The breakdown is big and drawn out and is responsible for this being a big ol'ten minute ride. Remote Area's Boris Werner, proving ever reliable, gives the original a more tribal feel, still keeping it deep but with a cracking drum ensemble, some whippy percussion and shakers and some very cool African vocals.

Where's Ratty is a more minimal house number, and feels straight out of Oslo stable. Nice a stabby and more naughty than Superhero, it's punctuated with the short jazzy guitar chords which keep things cheery. Like all Bearweasel tunes, it has a superb sense of rhythm, seemingly off beat but wonderfully paced and groovy. Romanian Ali Nasser's remix is a more old school feeling version (almost garagey, dare I say it), utilising the guitar from the original and taking you on a deeper bouncey journey. The vocal is fun too - 'let's go inside and play.' Ok then. Sounds fun. Busy is a meaty deep number, a woodblock, disco-ey drums looped nicely, and some proud looming stabs.

A decent release from one of the most consistent producers and consistent labels around.
