On a Good Day

By: OceanLab
Label: Anjunabeats
Written by: MarcoB
Rating: 8/10

On a Good Day, Above and Beyond’s latest OceanLab collaboration with vocalist Justine Suissa offers something for everyone with a full range of mixes and remixes from the likes of Daniel Kandi and 16 Bit Lolitas.

The original extended mix uses a rolling, prog style bassline which works well with Suissa’s smooth vocal delivery, natty piano solo and lush melodic pads, which are skilfully intertwined with a vocal sample at the downtime, creating an engaging ballad. As you’d expect, the tempo gets upped on the club mix, with the bass toughened up, and sharper, trademark OceanLab stabbing riffs adding more floor-filler energy. The piano and vocals combine at the breakdown with a hi-hat to maintain interest, before the bassline kicks back in.

Denmark’s leading uplifter Daniel Kandi offers a rich, textured remix full of rolling, epic melodies, swirling sounds that accompany a nice kicking bassline, which works really well with the sumptuous, deep vocals making it a very good day for any listeners.

Dutch prog dons, the 16 Bit Lolitas bring add a couple of interpretations to the offering. Their first remix is a great chunk of lush, deep prog with lazy melodies, gently undulating harmonies and the occasional darker stabs, while the vocals are only sampled in very brief snatches. Their downbeat remix doesn’t quite work as well, with bongo style percussion incorporated with the full vocals and melodies from the original.

The final remix is courtesy of newcomer Jer Martin, whose Deep Mix incorporates a stripped down bass and replacing the piano melodies with subtle electro-edged synths, while keeping the emphasis on the immaculate vocals.
